Adrián Gorelik

Adrián Gorelik
(Mercedes, Buenos Aires, 1957)

Adrián Gorelik (PhD in History; Architecture, Universidad de Buenos Aires) is a senior researcher at CONICET and was a full professor at the Universidad Nacional de Quilmes until 2024.

He is a member of the board of directors of Prismas.Revista de Historia Intelectual. He has been a member of the board of directors of the cultural journal Punto de Vistaand the architectural culture journal Block.

Among other distinctions, he was a member of the Akademie Schloss Solitude in Stuttgart in 1994-1995; he received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2003 and was Simón Bolívar Professor at the University of Cambridge in 2011-2012; he was a member of the Wissenschaftskolleg in Berlin in 2016-2017, and held the Tinker Chair at the University of Chicago in 2023. He has been a visiting professor at Harvard University, Freie Universität Berlin, Universidade de São Paulo, Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, and Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, among other institutions.

His books include: La grilla y el parque. Espacio público y cultura urbana en Buenos Aires, 1887-1936 (1998); Miradas sobre Buenos Aires. Historia cultural y crítica urbana (2004); Das vanguardas a Brasília. Cultura urbana e arquitetura na América Latina (2005); Correspondencias. Arquitectura, ciudad, cultura (2011); and La ciudad latinoamericana. Una figura de la imaginación social del siglo XX (2022). He has also edited three collaborative collective books: José Luis Romero. Vida histórica, ciudad y cultura (2013, with José Emilio Burucúa and Fernando J. Devoto), Ciudades sudamericanas como arenas culturales (2016, with Fernanda Arêas Peixoto), and La Argentina como problema (2018, with Carlos Altamirano).

His research topics include: urban cultural history (with works on Buenos Aires in the 19th and 20th centuries), the history of ideas about the city (with works on the socio-urban debate in Latin America in the 20th century), and the relationships between intellectual history and the history of the city and architecture (with various works on artists, historians, and intellectuals who have had a special focus on urban and architectural themes in the 19th and 20th centuries).
