Between the Pen and the Rifle.<\/b><\/h3>

Ning\u00fan periodo de la historia latinoamericana ha sido estudiado tan a fondo como la d\u00e9cada de 1960. En medio de esta proliferaci\u00f3n de textos, Between the Pen and the Rifle.<\/span><\/i>, de Claudia Gilman, destaca como una obra singular: panor\u00e1mica pero exhaustiva, inteligente a la vez que entretenida, y tan accesible como sofisticada. La autora disecciona los \u201ccatorce a\u00f1os prodigiosos\u201d transcurridos entre la Revoluci\u00f3n Cubana de 1959 y la ca\u00edda del gobierno de Salvador Allende en 1973. Barcelona, Buenos Aires, La Habana, Ciudad de M\u00e9xico y Montevideo, los centros neur\u00e1lgicos de la \u00e9poca, son los ejes en torno a los cuales giran los debates centrales. Gilman analiza el funcionamiento del mercado cultural, las conexiones entre los g\u00e9neros literarios y las transformaciones sociales y, especialmente, las vicisitudes de revistas como <\/span>Marcha<\/span><\/i>, <\/span>Mundo Nuevo<\/span><\/i>, <\/span>Casa de las Am\u00e9ricas<\/span><\/i> and <\/span>Libre<\/span><\/i>, que reflejan diferentes facetas de la vida literaria y cultural. Es la supervivencia del \u201cideal cr\u00edtico\u201d (contra la subordinaci\u00f3n de la verdad a la pol\u00edtica) lo que permite a la autora narrar la historia y desplegarla ante nuestros ojos para construir una genealog\u00eda de la especificidad latinoamericana de la independencia cr\u00edtica y la afirmaci\u00f3n de la autonom\u00eda intelectual.<\/span><\/p>

Between the Pen and the Rifle<\/b><\/h3>

No period in Latin American history has been as thoroughly studied as the 1960s. Amid this proliferation of texts, Claudia Gilman\u2019s <\/span>Between the Pen and the Rifle <\/span><\/i>stands out as a singular work: comprehensive yet exhaustive, intelligent yet entertaining, and as accessible as it is sophisticated. The author dissects the \u201cfourteen prodigious years\u201d between the Cuban Revolution of 1959 and the fall of Salvador Allende\u2019s government in 1973. Barcelona, Buenos Aires, Havana, Mexico City, and Montevideo, the nerve centers of the period, are the axes around which the central debates revolve. Gilman analyzes the functioning of the cultural market, the connections between literary genres and social transformations, and, especially, the vicissitudes of magazines such as <\/span>Marcha, Mundo Nuevo, Casa de las Am\u00e9ricas, and Libre<\/span><\/i>, which reflect different facets of literary and cultural life. It is the survival of the \u201ccritical ideal\u201d (against the subordination of truth to politics) that allows the author to narrate history and unfold it before our eyes in order to construct a genealogy of the specificity of critical independence and the affirmation of intellectual autonomy in Latin America.<\/span><\/p>
